How to choose a car battery?

The car battery is a fairly expensive unit, and its importance to the car cannot be overestimated. For example, in severe frost, without a reliable battery the car may not even start. Therefore, the purchase of the battery is a responsible matter. And the motorist should know how to choose the battery correctly, so it will be reliable, efficient and serve for a long time. Also, the owner of the car should remember where to go if the car has become unrepairable:

Serviced and maintenance-free batteries

All batteries are divided into three types:

Serviceable models require regular topping up with distilled water.
Low-maintenance – require a refill, but not often, usually once every six months or even less.
Non-maintenance models don’t require refilling at all. They have a life span of 4-7 years.

At one time, maintenance batteries had plates made of antimony and lead. Today this technology is practically not used, because they are inferior to other models in terms of performance characteristics. But they are cheap, so you can still find them.

More popular are low-maintenance models, in which the plates are made of alloys based on antimony, copper, selenium and tin. It is necessary to refill water once every six months or a year, and the total resource is up to 5 years. You can recognize such batteries by the presence of water plugs, which are on the lid.

Basic selection criteria

The main criteria for selection are:

The size of the battery. It is necessary to select them depending on the specific model of the car, so that the battery can be easily placed in its intended place. Particular attention should be paid to the support plate. It must be smooth and thick enough to last a long time, despite the shocks and vibrations. Fasteners must be secure. You should also pay attention to the size of the terminals – for example, in Japanese cars, they are smaller, for them produce a separate line of batteries.
Battery capacity is the amount of electricity that the battery can receive or deliver. The higher its capacity, the longer the starter will crank the engine. But the battery will take longer to charge, and its cost will be higher. Battery capacity is often selected in accordance with the volume of the engine. It is not necessary to purchase batteries with “spare” capacity. It is not dangerous for the car, just impractical in terms of the cost of such a battery and its size.
Starting current is an important parameter, especially for regions with cold climates. This parameter reflects the current value for a “cold” engine when starting. The lower the winter temperatures in the region, the higher the starting current value should be.
All the listed values must be specified in the marking. The documentation should also include information about the country of origin and manufacturing company.

Other things to pay attention to

It is absolutely necessary to check the polarity when buying. Plus and minus terminals may be on opposite sides. The polarity can be straight, when the plus terminal is on the left side, or reversed – on the right. Choose a model depending on the features of the car, it is not recommended to reverse the battery for reversing polarity or to increase the wiring.

When selecting and evaluate additional options such as the presence of the charge indicator and the handle for carrying.

In order to choose a battery that will meet all these parameters, it is best to contact a specialized store – such work in “Automall” in (Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk). Specialists will help you find a battery that will optimally match the parameters of a particular car. And to replace the battery you can make an appointment at our car service.
